The obverse of the coin was designed by the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in the early 1900s. Lady Liberty is depicted as if she were stepping towards the viewer of the coin from out of a rising sun. Her hair flowing in the wind with a torch in her right hand which represents Enlightenment. She holds an olive branch in her left hand representing Peace. The inscription “Liberty” is boldly struck above her head, and the United States Capitol Building is standing behind her to her lower right. There are 50 stars surrounding the obverse of this 1/4 ounce gold coin that obviously represent the 50 US States. This design is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coin designs ever created. The reverse image on the back of the coin features a new design created by the sculptor Miley Busiek in 1986 for the American Gold Eagle coin series. Her sculpture features a male bald eagle with an olive branch in its talons flying towards the nest of his mate. In the nest are their hatch-lings, with inscriptions “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust” just above the nest.
